Chapter Twenty-three

James

The sun is just rising in the sky as Luca pulls the SUV up to the gate surrounding my property. I tell him the code—072101—and he laughs at me. Yes, it’s Alessandra’s birthday, and I don’t care how much shit he gives me because I know they use it for everything, too. We’re all a bit smitten with our girl.

Nah, that’s a lie. We’re all head over heels in love with her and have been since we were all teenagers.

I wave the others ahead of us so Luca can enter the code again if the gates start to close too soon. Once they’ve all passed us, he drives us onto the property. The road that leads to the house is long and windy, bracketed by thick trees on either side. No one can spot the house from the road which is exactly how I wanted it.

This was not what I wanted to use this property for, and I hate that we’re having to. The most important thing is keeping Alessandra safe—even if it means letting other people onto a property that was only ever meant to be known by four people.

Finally, the massive structure appears in a break in the trees. It’s an old, gothic home and I know Alessandra will love it—hence why I bought it.

We pull up behind the other SUVs and climb out before moving to join Vito and Alessandra. Vito is still very obviously pissed off with his arms crossed, glowering at what was meant to be our home away from home. Alessandra has a grin on her face, practically bouncing on her toes as she turns to me.

“Holy shit, James. This place is so awesome but so not your style. Why would you buy it?”

I duck my head, feeling myself flush, and I’m very aware of the others surrounding us. “We’ll talk about it later, yeah?”

I don’t wait for her to answer as I stride toward the house. The front door has a key lock and a hand scanner. Can’t be too safe after all. I get it unlocked and usher the others inside.

“I’ll make some copies of the key and get all of you added to the scanner after we’ve slept. The bottom floor only has one bedroom, and that one is for Alessa. The second and third floors have plenty of rooms for all of us.” I turn to Luca and Vito. “There are rooms ready for us up there already. You’ll know them when you see them.”

“But will we?” Enzo asks tiredly. “You know what? We’ll head up to the third floor.”

“Natalia and Aria,” I call out as they start to follow the others up the stairs. “There’s a room to the right of the stairs on the second floor that’s for you two.”

They look surprised but too tired to ask any questions. They both send us a wave before trekking up the stairs. Then it’s just the four of us left.

Vito, Luca, and Alessandra all look at me with confusion in their eyes.
